Insider Insights

Tips from Anthony Covarrubias
  • I greatly benefitted from mentors who believed in me and counselors who had my back. If you don’t feel supported by the people around you, look into options to transfer or try a new lab. The quality of support around you can make all the difference.

  • Science can be competitive and a lot of hard work, but it’s also a very rewarding career. If you can find the questions and approaches that keep you excited and motivated, you can make a real impact on people’s lives.

  • There are tons of scholarships out there, as well as different types of financial aid. PhD programs often don’t charge tuition, and actually pay you (even if not a lot). Many colleges offer career and study counseling for students who are struggling. These are the kinds of tips and insights that can open up new possibilities, so don’t be afraid to research what you need.
