At work, scientists often use complicated words called “jargon”, but that’s not helpful when it’s time to share our work with the public. It’s important to find ways to communicate what you’re doing that non-scientists can connect to, so take advantage of opportunities to learn and practice explaining science to lots of different people.

It’s no secret that science careers are competitive, but that doesn’t mean you have to take any job you’re offered. It’s important that you pay attention to what makes you happy so that you can prioritize communities and environments that line up with that. It may take a little longer, but it’s worth the wait.

Oftentimes, the things we think make us “not belong” are also our strengths. Whether it’s your creativity, your story, or even a love of fashion and style, there are always unexpected ways that it can enhance the work you do. By bringing it all, you’re not only making science more relatable to others, but it will also help you come up with creative ways to solve problems.
