A Little About Me

  • At my core, I'm a storyteller.

Storytelling shows up in every part of my life, from the way I explain scientific concepts to my love of painting portraits. Whether it’s through my research, my art, or a casual conversation, I naturally gravitate toward telling the full story—sometimes with all the details. For me, it’s not enough to focus on facts or surface-level insights. I like to weave together the experiences, patterns, and moments that shape the bigger picture.

  • I believe science needs to change to better connect with the real world.

For me, science feels most exciting when it reflects different cultures and experiences—it makes learning more meaningful. That’s one of the reasons I co-founded AfroBiotech, a conference that highlights the amazing work of Black scientists and creates space for more people to feel like they belong in science. We’ve held four conferences so far, and we’re working on expanding internationally by partnering with scientists in Uganda!

  • I like to keep my body moving.

Hiking, jogging, and dancing have always been my favorite ways to stay active. Whether I’m exploring a new trail or finding a place to dance salsa or bachata, moving my body helps me reset and stay focused. Physical activity gives me the energy I need to tackle challenges in both the lab and life.

  • I am drawn to things with depth, layers, and hidden connections.

I’m always trying to make sense of intricate patterns—whether it’s understanding how genes turn on and off in cells, finding layers in jazz music, or working with textures and composition in my art. For me, it’s about uncovering the underlying structure of things and seeing how the pieces fit together. That’s just how I navigate the world—by looking for connections and dimensions that others might not see at first glance.

MY ADVICE

“I don't care what you think about me or what you expect a scientist to look like. I'm going to go in here and do this.”

WHO I AM

People describe me as..

  • Thoughtful.

Something President Barack Obama once said really resonated with me: “I like to think before I speak.” I’m the same way. I don’t feel the need to fill the void with words just to hear myself talk.

  • Observant.

I used to think that I was an introvert, but really, I’m more of an observer. I take time to get comfortable in a situation. At a party, I might walk up to a group and just listen and evaluate the situation before I try to engage.

  • Empathetic.

I think it's really important to see things from other people’s perspectives. That tends to make people really comfortable around me. I try to be slow to react and quick to really listen.

  • Pragmatic.

Does this work or does it not? I am very motivated to get things done, and can often try to push those around me to focus on results and getting through to them quickly.
