A Little About Me

  • My environment has a big impact on my state of mind.

I am a true maximalist and love being surrounded by a wide variety of tastes, sounds, colors, and ideas. But my inner Marie Kondo is always asking, “Does this spark joy?”. It needs to if I have it in my space. (My goldendoodle, Photon, definitely makes the cut!)

  • I have been performing South Asian music since I was three.

I grew up surrounded by music. My mom is a professionally-trained Bengali singer and my dad plays a pair of hand drums called “tabla.” My mom and I both play the harmonium, which is kind of like a large accordion. I love the storytelling aspect of the poetry-like lyrics in Bengali, Hindi, and Urdu music.

  • I am in awe when considering what humanity is capable of.

I believe that creativity is a powerful skill, both in the sciences and the arts. That’s why I insisted on taking arts and humanities classes in college, even though I knew I wanted to be a scientist. Being a creative person makes me a better scientist because it helps me look at problems in new ways.

  • I am deeply passionate about achieving equality.

As a woman of color in a leadership role, I’ve often faced others questioning whether I deserve to be here. Only a small percentage of biotech CEOs are women, and even fewer are women of color. I want to support others who may face barriers due to their race, gender, or other factors, which is also why I co-created the I Am a Scientist program!

WHO I AM

People describe me as..

  • Expressive

I grew up in an extremely organized home, but I prefer living in organized chaos—books, posters, postcards, and motivational sayings all around me. I express myself through everything from fashion to acrylic paintings to South Asian rhythms.

  • Principled

I believe that the work we do should reflect our values. I make sure fairness and equity are at the core of everything. It’s not just about success—it’s about doing things in a way that serves the most people possible, even when it’s hard.

  • Stubborn

My lab work during my PhD was incredibly frustrating at times, but I kept working at it. Lab science requires grit and willpower, so being stubborn is an asset!

  • Independent

My parents involved me in family decisions from an early age. That instilled a deep sense of independence and agency in me that drives how I operate in the world.

  • Joyful

I try to find time for joy even when things are stressful. I love blasting K-pop, singing with my daughter, or finding a bold suit for my next big talk. It’s about celebrating the little moments.

“Science isn’t just about genius—it’s about persistence. I spent years with unstable lasers, working seven days a week from morning to night, seeing little success. But doing science in the lab teaches you to keep going, no matter what. The people who succeed are the ones who refuse to give up.”
