Tips from Nabiha Saklayen

Mentors want to see that you’re invested in your own growth. It’s not just about seeking advice—it’s about taking action on the guidance you receive and sharing your progress along the way. Think of mentorship as a two-way relationship. When you show that you’re committed and engaged, your mentor is more likely to stay invested in your journey. Be open to feedback, honest about challenges, and willing to grow together. The best mentor relationships are built on accountability, trust, and mutual respect.

As a leader (or in any field, really!), it’s essential to take time to reflect and understand what your non-negotiables are—those core values you won’t compromise on. Whether it’s equity, transparency, or integrity, these principles will guide your decisions. Staying true to them hasn’t always been easy, especially in settings where they aren’t common, but they are what keep me grounded. When you know your values, you’ll be better prepared to lead with clarity and purpose, no matter the challenges that come your way.

Not all schools offer the same opportunities, so it’s important to do your research. It’s more about fit than it is about prestige. Some universities have robust programs that allow undergraduates to join research labs right away, while others might not. If you’re interested in research, ask counselors, professors, and current students about what’s available. Look for schools with a track record of supporting undergrad research—it can make a huge difference in shaping your career. Don’t be afraid to ask questions; finding the right fit can set you up for success.
